Orascom To Get A Settlement Fee From France Telecom For Mobinil Issue

europe(orascom)France Telecom announced that it would pay a global settlement fee of $300 million to Orascom Telecom Holding. This was because it was a part of their agreement on the Egyptian telecom operator, Mobinil. This finally concluded a prolonged dispute between the two major telecom companies.

This settlement fee is also supposed to be a part of the agreement that both companies presented in front of the Egyptian Financial Supervisory Authority. According to officials from France Telecom, this fee will only be payable when a restated and amended shareholders’ agreement will come into power.

KPN Nets Impressive Profits In Q1

europe(kpn)Dutch telecom company, KPN witnessed a huge growth of 42% in Q1. Its local revenue losses were overshadowed by its profits in the international unit.

The company gained a total net profit of about €449 million in 1Q10. This was a significant improvement when compared to the profit made in 1Q09 which was only €317 million. It also grew its EBITDA by a healthy 7.2% to € 1.2 billion. On the other hand its year on year revenue was down by three and a half percent to 3.3 billion euros. This decrease happened because of KPN’s Dutch unit in which the net revenue declined considerably.

European Networks Need A Huge Investment

europe(network)German networks need a huge investment to improve their standards. In fact, according to Rene Obermann, the boss of leading telecom service provider, Deutsche Telekom, all the carriers put together have to invest a staggering amount of € 50 billion just to meet the growing demand for mobile phone data apps.

Rene Obermann told the local German newspaper, Sueddeutsche Zeitung that the € 50 billion was absolutely necessary because, nowadays, people use more and more bandwidth ravenous apps. He predicted that the average consumption of bandwidth by a single person will reach about 10-15 gigabytes per month.
