The global telecom community is increasingly being attracted towards Ghana as the market potential of Ghana is suddenly becoming clear. Ghana has one of the highest levels of penetration rates in terms of internet. It has an average penetration of about 5% in the urban areas in terms of internet, in a continent which doesn’t have an average penetration of more than 1%. The country has close to 65% penetration in mobile telephony. However, close study reveals that many people are having connections to multiple networks. Hence, 65% may not be that realistic a figure.
However, in all this the penetration in rural areas is still really low and that is hampering the communication all over the country. This is what is attracting all the telecom service providers all over the world. Ghana is still relatively new in the field of telecommunications and that would provide endless opportunities for all the telecom service providers.
However, the environment in Ghana isn’t that favorable for the telecommunications industry because of the poor functionality of the local ministry, the NCA (National Communications Authority). The NCA is accused by the local public of simply watching on as the cell phone networks in the country continue to deliver poor service.
On the other hand, the development made by Ghana is widely acknowledged. Ghana is listed to host 2 huge ICT conferences in 2010 so as to promote the telecom industry in Ghana.
The CEO of CTO, Ekow Spio Garbrah, said recently that it was good to see that Ghana had seen more than 45% penetration in mobile telephony. He mentioned that CTO wants to examine all the government policies and the frequency allocations so as to facilitate all the available services to the rural areas. The conferences are going to discuss cheap methods of providing all services to the rural areas.
